By now, many of you have probably not only heard of the Ice Bucket Challenge, but you’ve taken it. This is the perfect example of social media marketing making an impact – in this case, raising over $13M more in donations for the ALS Association from 8/1 – 8/15 than in the same period last year (just $1.7M).
There’s a lot to learn from this campaign that you can apply to your social media efforts:
1.) Keep your campaign simple. In this case, it’s either donate or pour a bucket of ice water over your head within 24 hours of being challenged!
2.) Encourage others to pass it along. The IBC is viral by design: once you do it, you must challenge multiple others to do so.
3.) Make it fun!
Now, you likely don’t have a wonderful cause behind your campaigns – which is also a huge reason why the IBC has been successful. But the three simple rules above can get you some momentum.
